Davi Schulman: Founding Editor and Reporter

I’ve lived my whole life in New Rochelle. I’m a proud graduate of Jefferson Elementary School, where I became fluent in Spanish through the former CILA program, Isaac E. Young Middle School and New Rochelle High School, where my interest in journalism emerged and I became editor-in-chief of the Huguenot Herald. I went on to Connecticut College, where I studied English and Sociology and worked for the student newspaper all four years, as a writer and editor. I also did a summer editorial internship at Westchester Magazine and freelance reporting for other Westchester newspapers.

Right after graduating college, I spent 10 days in Washington, D.C., because I was selected to participate in the Politico Journalism Institute. With a small cohort of the best student journalists from all over the country, I learned what it takes to be a political reporter in the capital and even co-authored an article for the former E&E News. Now I work as a full-time staff intern at U.S. News & World Report, writing daily national news stories on a variety of topics.

But the fact that my home city didn’t have its own professional and independent news coverage continued to occupy my mind. How could such a large and diverse city go without local journalism? Everyone has the right to be fully informed about the issues in their town, but as local news outlets die, that right seems to be more of a privilege. I believe in journalism as a means of drawing attention to the issues that matter to people, raising the voices of marginalized communities and holding leaders accountable.

Enter: New Roc News. I’m employing my journalism skills and experience living in New Rochelle to fill the gap in local news coverage.
